When the Center for Key Populations was established in 2015, we made a decision to focus on 5 key groups the World Health Organization recognizes as carrying the highest burden of and risk for HIV infection. The 5 groups include:
-
Men who have sex with men
-
Transgender women
-
People who inject drugs
-
People in prison
-
Sex workers
We have since expanded our efforts to include populations who experience health disparities secondary to stigma and discrimination. These populations experience many barriers to health care and are disproportionately affected by HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), substance use, and many other co-morbidities. To address these unique and interrelated needs, the Center brings together, under one roof, health care and advocacy to the following communities:
-
The LGB and Transgender populations
-
People who use drugs
-
Homeless and those experiencing housing instability
-
Recently incarcerated
-
People who engage in transactional sex
